When I was 25, I watched a video that laid out 8 reasons why your 30’s are better than your 20’s. That video is now gone as far as I could find, but I did manage to find the 8 images/reasons that were in the video though. Have a look.
Not meaning to brag, but after seeing the video with all the above images, I realized that I was already mentally in my 30s despite being 25 at the time. My mindset then was mostly aligned with the images on the right. So I thought “I guess I should start learning from people in their 40s….. Wait, why stop there? Wouldn’t I benefit more from learning from people in their 50s? 60s? Or just go straight to those in their 80s and 90s? They’ve got to be the smartest, wisest people out there right?” Hmm, actually that’s not correct. Wisdom is not correlated 1 to 1 with age. Yea, there’s a correlation, but sometimes someone in their 60s might be wiser than someone in their 80s. And when it comes to intelligence, well, IQ, both fluid and crystallized eventually decline with age. So there in lay two problems.
I eventually determined that I should aim to learn from the wisest and most intelligent people out there regardless of age. How do I figure out who those people are? Well for intelligence, most people are familiar with IQ, but people can be smart in different areas. Someone could be really smart in math and physics, but lack streets smarts or social skills. The same applies in reverse. I decided that when trying get smarter in a particular area, I’d do best by learning from the smartest people in the given area that I’m looking at. So learn physics from the scientists and streets smarts from the gangsters.
As far as for wisdom, that one is a bit trickier. There is no established measurement for wisdom as far as I could find. But we all kind of have a sense for it. When you see a quote or listen to someone speaking, you can kind of tell from gut instincts if they are speaking truths or not. So I started looking for wisdom from the wisest people out there. But the wisest people out there might not be people who are currently alive. They may have lived 500 years ago or 2000 years ago. So I began to look through books and writings from long ago all the way to the modern day. This started my search for wisdom and after having been on that trail for over 8 years, I think I have come across some insights to share that might be helpful for others.
